Historically seen as a rich-man’s game, golf was out of reach for most people — both financially and culturally. For just over a hundred years, it was a game for the select few (who wanted to keep it that way).
Then, things suddenly changed.
Tiger Woods arrived on the scene in the early ‘90s, winning the Masters at 21 years old. He accomplished what no other golfer could have done — he made golf cool. He is often credited with single-handedly changing the public perception of the game, as well as public participation.
Golf’s popularity exploded over the next decade. Kids idolized Woods in the same respect as the day’s leading athletes. In so many ways, Woods opened the door of golf to the public. If you show up at your nearest course today, you’ll find the widest diversity of people, young and old, waiting to tee off.
